Rangers Shine at Winter Showcase Event
The Whatcom FC Rangers had four standout performances at the PacNW Winter Classic over Martin Luther King weekend. At one one the largest winter showcases in the country, boasting over 525 teams, the Boys 2003, Girls 2000, Girls 2002 and Girls 2003 Gold teams made big impressions over the weekend. With a combined 9-5-1 record, both the Boys 2003 and the Girls 2000 Gold teams advanced to the semi-finals. They scored a combined 30 goals this weekend.
Boys 2003 Gold:
After dominating group play, the boys advanced to the semi-finals. Carter Weiner lead the team in points, scoring five goals and tallying three assists in four games. “Overall we were solid all weekend except the last game,” explains head coach Jason Conway. “After losing a key player in the first game to injury, all players stepped up and worked hard to fill in for him.”
Girls 2000 Gold:
Leading the team in points were senior forward Ireland Eaton and junior forward Zola Carbone. They combined for five goals and five assists on the weekend. The dynamic duo helped lead the team to the semi-finals where they eventually fell to a fellow Division 1 team, Three Rivers FC.
Girls 2003 Gold:
The 2003 Gold team went 2-1 on the weekend, their only loss was to the PacNW 04 ECNL team. Sophomore Abbie Batt lead the team in scoring with five goals. 2004 play up Ellie VanBerkum posted one shutout on the weekend. “This weekend I was looking forward to playing in competitive games,” said forward Abbie Batt. “We learned a lot about each other as a team which helped us grow.”
Girls 2002 Gold:
The ’02 girls faced stiff competition this weekend, going 0-2-1. All of the games were tight matches, decided by a single goal. They did however win the PacNW Winter Classic team photo contest, with this creative team photo!
