Boys 1999/2000 Gold – A Season to Remember
A trip to the Washington State Championships (State Cup) semi-finals highlighted the WFC Rangers 1999/2000 Boys Gold Team’s incredible season. The team finished their season with a 16-2-2 record, after completing their regular season perfect at 14-0.
“The season couldn’t have been any better.” Coach Greg Brisbon said. “The players were sharp the whole season, we scored a lot of goals, and they got better each week.”
The boys scored an impressive 71 goals this season and were the only RCL Division 2 team to compete into the State Cup tournament. Their only two losses of the season were against the #1 and #2 ranked teams in RCL Division 1.
Behind Head Coach Greg Brisbon, the Rangers had an impressive post season run. Being the only RCL division 2 team in the tournament, advancing out of group play was already an amazing accomplishment but their story doesn’t end there. Against the odds, the Rangers beat PacNW, the #3 ranked RCL Division 1 team, 3-1 in a dominating performance in the quarter-final game to advance.
The Rangers season came to an end in the State Cup semi-finals in a 5-1 loss to Washington Premier FC. Despite the score, there were multiple highlights for the 99/00 Rangers.
“Prithvi had a great tournament” Greg Brisbon said enthusiastically about his goalkeeper’s performance in the semi-final. “He was the Man of the Match in my eyes. He made some big plays, he came off his line well, and made three 1v1 saves in this game.” Prithvi started and played in every game during the State Cup Tournament. He posted five shutouts this season and a 1.2 goals against average.
The 99/00 boy’s only goal in the semi-final came halfway through the first half, when Aaron Carter received the ball on the left wing, cut inside onto his right foot, and ripped a shot from 25 yards out. “Aaron scored a great goal” Greg said of his left winger. “we transitioned quickly, which has been one of our strengths all season, and were able to find (Aaron) open on the wing.”
With 12 seniors on the 99/00 roster, this post season run was an unforgettable way to finish out their careers with Whatcom Rangers.
“I’m very proud of all of the players, it is quite an accomplishment for this team to have such an amazing season” Coach Greg Brisbon said. “We had a lot of fun together, it was great to see this group compete on the weekends, they were such a pleasure to coach.”
